Ukraine Disrupts Russian Maritime Logistics with Drone Strikes

For over two years, Ukraine has been dismantling the foundations of Russia's oil industry through targeted strikes on refineries, fuel depots, and transport infrastructure. Initially focused on depriving the Russian military of fuel, the campaign expanded to target the Russian economy as a whole by seeking to trigger a systemic crisis.

Recently, the nature of these operations has evolved with drones increasingly targeting Russia's maritime logistics in the Azov and Black Seas. Tankers, cargo ships, tugboats, and ferries have all come under attack, making it increasingly risky for Russia to use these routes that supply occupied Crimea and transport military cargo.

Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces reported 196 vessels supporting Russia's maritime logistics were struck in the first 18 days of July, with 126 hit in the Sea of Azov and 70 in the Black Sea. These targets included tankers, bulk carriers, ferries, tugboats, and specialized vessels transporting petroleum products and military cargo.

The operation, dubbed Operation MoLoChKa by Ukraine's forces, aims to make it increasingly difficult for Russia to maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies to Crimea and sustain exports of Russian petroleum products. The campaign's 'surgical precision' involves targeting the propeller and rudder assembly at the stern or the bridge where controls are concentrated, disabling vessels without causing an oil spill.
