Ukraine Eyes Ethanol Boost Amid Grain Export Blockade
Ukraine's grain exports have been severely impacted by the Russian army's blockade of ports and ships in the Black Sea. In response, Ukrainian authorities are considering a novel solution to utilize un-exported grain: converting it into ethanol for fuel.
This approach is already being implemented in Asia and South America, where countries like India and Brazil use significant amounts of bioethanol in their fuel mixtures. BMW has even prepared cars to run on high-ethanol content fuel.
According to Sergey Makogon, former director of the Ukrainian GTS Operator, Ukraine's bioethanol industry is growing rapidly, with a 160% increase in production capacity over the past year. The country also exported more than 10.6% more bioethanol to the EU in the first half of this year.
Makogon argues that using un-exported grain for ethanol production could provide a strategic advantage for Ukraine, reducing dependence on imported gasoline and creating a new sales channel for farmers bypassing blocked ports.
