Ukraine Grain Blockade Threatens Global Food Price Spike
Ukraine's Minister for Agrarian Policy and Food, Taras Vysotskyi, has warned that the blockade of Ukraine's Black Sea export routes could have far-reaching implications for global food prices.
The blockade, which is becoming 'critical', has already led to a 25% increase in grain prices, with the potential for $60 billion in additional costs for consumers worldwide within a year, Vysotskyi said.
Russia's intensified strikes on Ukrainian Black Sea vessels and infrastructure have severely impacted Ukraine's ability to export around 90% of its agricultural commodities.
Vysotskyi noted that Kyiv is making progress in ensuring Ukrainian harvests reach the market through 'solidarity lanes' established by the EU, but expressed caution about trusting Russia's commitment to a potential moratorium, citing the country's history of broken agreements.
