Ukraine Grain Exports Under Threat as Conflict Disrupts Shipping
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is disrupting grain exports, which could lead to significant losses for Ukrainian farmers and increased food prices worldwide. The country's agriculture minister, Taras Vysotsky, warned that the current situation may be more challenging than it was during the first months of Russia's full-scale invasion.
As a result of Russian attacks on civilian ships in the Black Sea port city of Odessa, grain exports from Ukraine have been severely impacted. In July alone, there were 35 attacks on ships in ports and 22 on ships at sea, as well as 67 strikes on port infrastructure. The Ukrainian Ministry of Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport reported these numbers.
The situation has led to a significant drop in grain prices, with oilseeds and grains falling by an average of 30 percent, according to Vysotsky. Direct losses for Ukraine's agricultural sector could reach between $1.5 billion and $3 billion this year, the minister added.
