Ukraine Imposes Restrictions on GMO Crops Under New Law

A new law in Ukraine will come into force on September 16, 2026, regulating genetic engineering activities and controlling GMO placement on the market. According to Law No. 3339-IX, genetically modified corn is banned indefinitely, while rapeseed and sugar beets are prohibited for five years.

However, there's no direct ban on soybeans, but they must undergo state registration. Currently, half of Ukraine's soybean crops are genetically modified.

Experts believe that despite the law, the share of GM corn is less than 3-5% and mostly grown for research purposes. The lack of regulation on intellectual property protection and payment of royalties may delay the registration and commercial use of GM varieties until 2030.
