Ukraine Seeks 30-Year Energy Deal with Canada for LNG Supplies
Ukraine is seeking to establish a long-term energy agreement with Canada to secure liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, according to Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal. The proposed 30-year deal aims to diversify Ukraine's gas supply routes and create an 'energy security bridge' between the two countries.
Shmyhal stated that Ukraine has already discussed the preparations for a potential 650 million Canadian dollar direct grant from Canada to purchase natural gas as part of this year's assistance package. Additionally, Naftogaz Group and U.S.-based Argent LNG signed a cooperation agreement in July to purchase, transport, and distribute American LNG to Ukraine and broader markets across Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe.
The Ukrainian government values the assistance provided through the Energy Support Fund; Canada's total contributions have already reached 90 million Canadian dollars. Naftogaz partnered with Polish state energy giant Orlen in early February to deliver Ukraine's first shipment of American liquefied natural gas for 2026.
