Ukrainian forces launched a surprise attack on Russia's Novorossiysk port, striking three major grain export terminals and the naval base that serves as the Black Sea Fleet's last stronghold. The assault, which occurred in the early hours of August 11-12, has suspended operations at key export facilities and raised concerns about global wheat supply stability.

The attack involved Palianytsia drones and Neptune missiles, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy describing targets that included air-defense systems and broader port infrastructure. The Demetra Holding terminal, the NKHP facility linked to the Novorossiysk Grain Plant, and the KSK terminal sustained direct hits.

Operations at two of the major terminals have been suspended while damage assessments are underway, with one child killed and eight people injured in the strikes. The assault has pushed insurance costs for vessels operating in the Black Sea region even higher, adding friction and cost to every shipment that manages to leave, even from facilities that were not directly hit.

Novorossiysk is Russia's most important Black Sea port, with NKHP alone having an export capacity of roughly 7.1 million metric tons per year. Ukraine and Russia together account for a massive share of the world's wheat exports, making this attack a significant disruption to global supply chains.

This was not the first time Novorossiysk has come under fire in 2026, with Ukrainian forces striking the port in both April and June. The pattern suggests that Ukraine is targeting Russian export infrastructure along the Black Sea coast, treating Novorossiysk as both a military and economic target simultaneously.
