Ukraine Targets Russian Grain Facilities, Raising Global Food Market Concerns

Ukrainian military forces launched an attack on Russian grain facilities in Novorossiysk, striking two major export terminals that handle nearly 16 million tons of grain annually. The assault damaged one of the terminals belonging to the Union Grain Company and another operated by Demetra Holding.

The attack killed three people, including an 8-year-old child, and injured 24 others. Water supplies were cut off in Novorossiysk due to damage to water mains, prompting the city to declare an emergency.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the attack as a 'unique operation,' combining rockets and drones to target Russian naval infrastructure. The strikes have raised concerns about global food markets, which have already seen wheat prices surge due to attacks on export infrastructure by both Ukraine and Russia.

Ukraine is a major supplier of grain to global markets, exporting wheat, corn, barley, and rapeseed. Russian officials accused Ukraine of acting in the interests of its Western allies to create 'chaos' in the global food market, leading to shortages and higher prices for countries in the Global South and East.
