Ukraine War Unleashes Hunger Pandemic Across Africa

Russia's war on Ukraine has far-reaching consequences, affecting food security in The Gambia and other countries. The conflict disrupts global trade, leading to higher prices for wheat, shipping rates, insurance costs, fuel costs, and fertiliser prices. This is particularly challenging for a small import-dependent economy like The Gambia with limited fiscal resources.

According to the EU, Russia's attacks on Ukraine's ports, shipping lanes, and agricultural infrastructure have weaponised hunger against millions in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The impact of these disruptions is not confined to the region and could affect food supplies for years to come.

The EU has implemented the Solidarity Lanes to provide an alternative route for Ukrainian grain exports, but this cannot fully replace the scale and efficiency of normal Black Sea access. A moratorium on attacks against grain export facilities, infrastructure, and shipping in the Black Sea is urgently needed to ensure safe passage of civilian vessels and protect critical infrastructure.
