Ukraine War's Ripple Effect: Kenyan Families Adjust Cooking Habits Amid Rising Energy Costs
The war in Ukraine had far-reaching consequences for global markets and food prices. Kenya was particularly affected, as the country imports about 92% of its wheat. Researchers studied families in an informal settlement in Nairobi to see how rising energy costs impacted their cooking habits.
With international crude oil and natural gas prices increasing sharply after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, global food prices reached record highs. This had a direct impact on Kenya's economy, which relies heavily on imported wheat.
The researchers found that three-quarters of the families they studied changed their diets due to rising food costs. More than half ate less meat and fish, while consuming more ugali (maize porridge) and vegetables. Half of the families also skipped meals.
