Ukraine's Agricultural Sector at Risk of Collapse Amid Black Sea Port Disruptions
Ukraine's agricultural sector is facing a severe crisis due to disruptions at its Black Sea ports. The Ukrainian Agrarian Council has called on Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to take immediate action to address the issue, warning that widespread bankruptcies are imminent if something is not done.
The port closures and damage to berths have already led to a significant backlog of grains and oilseeds, with estimates suggesting that around 81.4 million metric tons will be produced in 2026-2027. However, the sector can only export around 67 million metric tons per year, leaving a surplus of between 27.4 and 32.4 million metric tons.
As a result, grain prices have plummeted to 7,000 hryvnias per metric ton, which is below production costs. The council is urging the government to provide emergency support measures, including low-cost loans for the fall planting season and state guarantees for existing agricultural loans.
