Ukraine's Biogas Potential Lures Investors Amid Regulatory Hurdles
Ukraine's biogas sector holds significant potential for growth, according to recent estimates. The International Energy Agency suggests that waste and residues alone could provide around 11.6 bcm of gas equivalent per year.
Agricultural businesses in the country can benefit from biogas as a way to process organic waste while also generating electricity and heat. Upgraded biogas can be converted into biomethane, serving as a substitute for natural gas. Additionally, digestate, a by-product of the process, can be used as an organic fertilizer.
The regions with the strongest potential for biogas projects are those with high numbers of livestock and poultry enterprises. Lviv region leads with 142 relevant companies, followed by Kyiv and Kyiv region with 114, Cherkasy with 66, and Poltava with 55.
However, despite this large feedstock base, Ukraine's biogas potential remains underutilized due to high upfront investment costs, difficulties connecting to energy grids, regulatory barriers, and limited awareness among agricultural producers about the economics of such projects.
