Ukraine's Grain Exports Plunge Amid Russia Blockade Threatening Harvest

The Ukrainian government has expressed concern that the country's grain exports will continue to decline due to Russia's blockade of sea ports. This may lead to a significant decrease in the area sown for the next harvest, with a possible drop of up to 7 million hectares.

Ukraine is one of the world's leading producers of grain and oilseeds, with annual exports totaling 60 million metric tons mainly consisting of corn and wheat. The current blockade has resulted in a sharp decline in exports, with grain export shipments totaling only 574,000 metric tons in August, down 60% from the same period last month.

The Agriculture Ministry stated that there is a risk that the area sown for the next harvest could decrease by 5 to 7 million hectares. Ukrainian railway officials say exports via the Danube could increase, but a shortage of vessels and frequent air-raid alerts are hampering operations.
