Ukraine's Role in Enabling US Energy Exports to Europe: A Strategic Imperative
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has inadvertently created an opportunity for the country to play a key role in enabling US energy exports to Europe, according to the Atlantic Council.
Since 2025, Ukraine has become one of the fastest-growing purchasers of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Europe, underscoring the strategic importance of LNG sales to the country.
Russian attacks on Ukraine's domestic gas production destroyed up to 60% of output capacity in 2022, forcing state-owned energy giant Naftogaz to rethink its import strategy. The response has been remarkable, with Naftogaz establishing four gateways for LNG imports from the US, including Poland's Świnoujście terminal and Lithuania's Klaipėda terminal.
Ukraine contracted approximately 456 million cubic meters of LNG from the US in 2025, with a figure of 381 million during the first quarter of 2026 alone. This puts the country on track to dramatically increase its annual purchasing rate.
