Ulsan Port Sees LNG Imports Soar as Local Industries Embrace Hydrogen Economy
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports through Ulsan Port in South Korea have surged over the past three years, driven by growing demand from local industries.
According to Ulsan Customs, LNG imports rose sharply after a dedicated terminal at Ulsan Port began full operation in November 2024. That year, the port handled 420,000 tons of LNG, but the upward trend accelerated in 2025, with imports reaching 1.53 million tons, up 264% from 2024.
The use of LNG is broadening beyond simple industrial energy into a multipurpose resource, with local power producers and refining and smelting companies using it as fuel for combined-cycle power plants, while the oil refining industry uses it as an essential raw material for hydrogen production.
