UN Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The United Nations Security Council has condemned the escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemeni Houthi fighters. The Houthis have imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, hitting its tankers and seizing swaths of Yemen's Red Sea coast vital for oil exports, causing energy prices to jump. A ground campaign is also being waged against Saudi-backed Yemeni forces, threatening a humanitarian crisis with 138,000 people displaced across Yemen since August.
The UN Security Council stated that the members 'condemned in the strongest terms' the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including those impacting civilian and energy infrastructure. The council also demanded that the Houthis cease their military escalation and attacks on civilians and civilian objects immediately.
Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian denied allegations of backing the Houthi militant movement, saying 'the Houthis are responsible for their own actions.' Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan will hold chief of staff talks to support the kingdom in response to Houthi attacks.
