UN Warns Libya Oil Infrastructure Attacks Could Trigger Sanctions

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has warned that attacks on oil and energy infrastructure could lead to measures under relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The mission stated that continued disruptions to oil pipelines are harming national revenues and could affect fuel supplies, electricity generation, and essential services used by people across Libya.

The Sharara-Zawiya pipeline has been disrupted, resulting in significant losses in oil production and public revenue. A prolonged interruption could also increase the need for fuel imports and put additional pressure on public finances.

UNSMIL called on all parties to protect oil and energy facilities, ensuring technical and operational staff can safely access and maintain them. The mission emphasized that infrastructure must be preserved in the interests of all Libyans.
