Uniper Secures Long-Term LNG Deal with BC's Ksi Lisims Project
Uniper, a German utility company, has signed a long-term agreement to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Ksi Lisims project in northern British Columbia. The deal is worth two million tonnes per year for up to 20 years, with first deliveries expected in 2032.
The Ksi Lisims LNG project, led by Houston-based Western LNG and a consortium of Canadian natural gas producers, including Rockies LNG and the Nisga'a Nation, aims to export up to 12 million tonnes of LNG per year from Pearse Island, near the Alaska border. Uniper has significant power generating capacity in northwestern Europe and is a major importer of LNG.
This agreement marks the first major long-term LNG supply deal between Canada and Germany, demonstrating growing ties between the two countries in the energy sector. The German government took over Uniper during the 2022 energy crisis but is now privatizing it.
