US Agricultural Markets Influenced by Statistics Canada Report and Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Agricultural markets in the US were influenced by several factors this week, including Statistics Canada's production report and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Tom Lilja, an analyst with Progressive Ag, noted that the monthly crush report from the US National Oilseed Processors Association and Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to Washington also played a role.
According to Lilja, the model-based principal field crop estimates from Statistics Canada were closely watched by traders, who compared them to the USDA's numbers. The StatCan report estimated all wheat production at 36.12 million tonnes, down nearly 11% from the record harvest in 2025-26.
The Russia-Ukraine war continued to impact grain exports through the Black Sea, with out of Ukraine down 67% and Russian exports falling 26% since June. This reduced supply led to speculation that farmers in either country may plant less winter wheat due to weaker commodity prices.
