US Ambassador Accused of Threatening Balkan Governments Over LNG Sales
The US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, has been at the center of controversy after reports surfaced that she threatened toppling governments to promote American liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales.
According to an article by The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle allegedly pressured Balkan leaders to purchase more LNG during a dinner in March. The ambassador reportedly mentioned the imminent fall of the Romanian government and said, 'We can do that to any country we want. We can do it here.'
The Greek energy minister, Stavros Papastavrou, responded by saying that the US could not replace the democratically elected Greek government.
In Romania, the article sparked strong reactions, with some politicians accusing others of negotiating with a foreign power to subjugate and economically destabilize the country. A Romanian MP even filed a criminal complaint against several political figures, including George Simion, Sorin Grindeanu, and Bogdan Ivan.
