A military exchange between the U.S. and Iran has escalated tensions in the region around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global crude oil and gas shipments.

The U.S. launched a 'limited, precise' strike against minelaying forces of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday, citing an imminent threat to navigation in the strait. The operation targeted units near the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Iran responded by claiming that a supertanker had been hit by two naval mines in the southern part of the strait, causing a fire and bringing the vessel to a halt. However, the U.S. military denied this claim.

U.S. President Donald Trump posted AI-generated videos on social media depicting explosions at Iran's Kharg Island, the country's main oil export hub. No attack on the island took place, but Vice President JD Vance said that Trump's post was intended to send a message to Tehran.
