US and Saudi Arabia Launch Joint Strikes on Iran-Backed Groups in Iraq
The United States and Saudi Arabia have launched joint airstrikes against Iran-backed groups in Iraq, in retaliation for drone attacks on Saudi oil targets. The strikes resulted in at least 20 deaths and 32 injuries among Iraqi fighters.
The attacks are the latest escalation in a conflict that has been ongoing since June, when the US and Iran reached an interim agreement to work towards ending the war. However, the agreement has since collapsed over disagreements on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy shipping route.
Tehran has rejected an Omani proposal for joint regional control of the strait, citing concerns that it would not serve Iran's interests. The US has been telling ships to use a route near the Omani shore rather than sailing close to Iran.
