US Bonds Take Hit as Oil Prices Ignite Inflation Fears
The US bond market experienced a sell-off due to rising oil prices and inflation anxiety. This led to higher yields on government bonds, impacting mortgage rates and other loans. The S&P 500 fell by 0.7%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 302 points, or 0.6%. Technology stocks like Nvidia and Micron Technology were among the heaviest weights on the market.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.78% from 4.75% late Monday, while the yield on the 2-year Treasury increased to 4.37% from 4.34%. Rising yields signal that investors are demanding a higher return due to growing government debt and risk.
Oil prices have been driving inflation concerns, with Brent crude rising by 2.5% to $92.74. Higher energy costs are fueling price increases across various sectors, including gasoline and shipped goods.
