US Boosts Air Defense in Middle East Amid Possible Iran Bombing Resumption
US military officials have reinforced Patriot air defense systems in Saudi Arabia and Qatar in anticipation of a possible resumption of large-scale combat operations against Iran. This move comes as US President Donald Trump considers reviving bombings targeting Iranian energy infrastructure and other sites.
The deployment of the Patriot systems aims to reassure these Middle Eastern allies that their energy facilities will be protected from potential Iranian retaliatory strikes. This concern was expressed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar when they dissuaded President Trump in early August from launching large-scale bombings against Iran, citing fears of retaliation against their oil and gas infrastructure.
US officials have stated that the aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt has departed San Diego and is heading to the Middle East. The Roosevelt carrier strike group is scheduled to arrive in the region by mid-November and will join two other existing carrier strike groups, significantly increasing firepower in the area.
A US official noted that three amphibious ships carrying thousands of Marines have also departed for the Middle East and are expected to arrive by late November. These forces will join other amphibious units already deployed in the region.
