US-Canada Energy Trade Sees Mixed Results in 2025
The energy trade between the U.S. and Canada saw mixed results in 2025, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
While the total value of energy trade between the two countries fell by 11% to an estimated $137 billion, the trade value of natural gas and electricity increased slightly due to higher prices and volumes.
Natural gas trade saw a significant increase, with the value of imports from Canada rising by 52% in 2025. The volume of U.S. natural gas imports from Canada averaged 8.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bft3d) in 2025, while exports to Canada increased by 4%.
Electricity trade between the two countries is relatively small, with a total value of $3.2 billion in 2025. However, new transmission lines have the potential to increase imports from Canada going forward.
