Venezuela's oil production has seen a rebound in recent times, but this comes under the watchful eye of the US government. According to experts, there is a lack of transparency surrounding the management of revenues from the industry.

The situation on the ground is dire, with widespread pollution and environmental degradation affecting the local population. In Cabimas, a town on the shores of Lake Maracaibo, residents are struggling to make ends meet due to the meager catches they can bring in. José Alirio Briceño, 72, was one such resident who expressed his frustration at the state of affairs.

'It's hard to clean all this up, because there are constant oil spills: You clean today, and tomorrow, it's polluted again,' he said. The pollution is not only affecting the environment but also the health of the residents.

The US government's control over Venezuela's oil production has been a contentious issue, with many experts condemning the lack of transparency and accountability. Civil society groups have also denounced the lack of economic benefits for oil-producing regions.
