US Corn Crop Remains Weakest in Season Despite 13% Maturity
The US corn crop has maintained its weakest condition rating of the 2026 growing season as of August 30, despite reaching 13% maturity. This is according to the USDA's 22nd weekly Crop Progress report released on August 31.
The 57% of corn rated good or excellent remains at a season low, and this figure is sharply below last year's 69%. Only 26% was classified as fair, while 17% was poor or very poor. The crop development itself shows some positive signs, with 92% of corn across the 18 leading producing states having reached the dough stage, three percentage points ahead of the five-year average.
The accelerated development has put more acreage closer to its final production stages as September begins, increasing attention on late-season weather and field conditions that could influence final soybean yields. However, corn condition ratings remain a concern for farmers and grain markets, with potential changes in yields and production being closely watched.
