US Corn Surplus Hides Looming Grain Supply Crisis
The US is experiencing an abundance of corn harvests for the third year in a row. However, this surplus does not alleviate concerns about a looming global grain supply crisis.
A report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that global corn consumption will outstrip production by nearly 30 million metric tons in the upcoming 2026/27 season, marking the largest deficit in over three decades.
The discrepancy is partly due to reduced grain production among major exporters, even as US farmers continue a strong harvest. Geopolitical tensions, such as ongoing conflicts affecting Russian and Ukrainian export stocks, further exacerbate the problem.
