US Corn Yield Forecast Rises Sharply in October Report

The US corn crop has defied earlier pessimism, according to the USDA's October Crop Production report. The agency raised its yield estimate by 2.7 bushels per acre from September, marking the largest September-to-October jump since 2005. This surprised many market participants who had anticipated a weaker harvest following a summer of drought and heat stress in the Corn Belt.

Concerns about the corn crop had been building for months. The Pro Farmer Crop Tour in August projected a 4.2% drop in production compared to the USDA's August forecast, while spot Chicago corn futures surged 29% from late June to early September. Speculative long positions reached record highs as traders bet on a smaller harvest. Additional support came from rising soybean futures, lower global corn production forecasts, and higher energy prices.

However, late-season rains disrupted harvest progress and allowed the USDA to measure more standing corn during its October sampling. The agency now forecasts US corn production at 16.034 billion bushels, up 1.5% from September. December corn futures dropped 4.1% after the report's release, settling at $4.79¾ per bushel. Analysts suggest the September forecast may have been overly pessimistic, with the October adjustment bringing the yield estimate back in line with expectations.

The next Crop Production report is scheduled for November 10, which will provide further clarity on the corn crop's final outlook. For now, the market appears to have adjusted to the revised forecast, with December corn futures failing to reclaim the $5-per-bushel benchmark as of October 15.
