US Crude Inventories Surge as SPR Taps Emergency Reserves
The US crude oil inventories have seen a significant rise of 4.2 million barrels in the week ending August 21, according to the American Petroleum Institute (API). This comes as a surprise to analysts who had expected a more modest build of 1.9 million barrels.
This increase is part of a larger trend, with US crude oil inventories up 5.8 million for the year. However, this growth has been kept in check by draws from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), which have released 3.7 million barrels over the same period.
The SPR's total inventory now stands at 289.7 million barrels, still shy of its maximum capacity by a significant margin. The generally accepted operational minimum for oil in the SPR is between 250-300 million barrels, below which the reserve may find it difficult to pump and process oil efficiently.
