US Destroys Iranian Oil Tankers as Conflict Escalates
The conflict between the US and Iran has escalated significantly in recent days, with both sides engaging in destructive attacks on each other's assets. The US military's Central Command posted video of its strikes against five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, which it called a response to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeting a US Navy warship twice with ballistic missiles over the previous two days.
No Americans were harmed in the attack, and the IRGC said its missiles inflicted heavy damage on the base used by US forces near Al Azraq in Jordan. However, Jordanian air defenses intercepted 18 of the 20 Iranian missiles, with two falling in unpopulated areas, and there were no casualties.
The IRGC also attacked 10 ships, including two US vessels and eight oil tankers, attempting to cross a 'prohibited and unsafe' area of the Strait of Hormuz. The US has accused Iran of trying to disrupt oil tanker traffic in the region, which is a vital energy conduit for global markets.
Oil prices have surged as a result of the escalating tensions, with Brent crude nearing $100 a barrel on market concerns over the disruption of oil tanker traffic. The conflict has also drawn in regional allies, with Saudi Arabia reporting blazes at its state oil company assets and several wounded civilians, including women and children.
