US Diesel Prices Hit Record High, Sparking Economic Concerns
Record-high diesel prices have sparked concern among politicians and market experts in the US. The average price of a gallon of diesel has reached $6.52, a 77% increase from last year's price. While oil prices have pulled back from $100 per barrel, diesel prices continue to rise due to reduced refining capacity.
The majority of diesel exports from the Middle East and Russia were down 75% year-over-year in August, according to the International Energy Agency. This has led to a bottleneck in supplies coming out of the Strait of Hormuz, further exacerbating the issue. The US economy relies heavily on diesel fuel for shipping, agriculture, construction, and mining.
Economists like Paul Krugman argue that higher diesel prices have a more direct impact on inflation and interest rates than gas prices. The Trump administration has also taken notice of the crisis, with President Donald Trump calling on Ukraine and Russia to end their war, which is affecting Russian oil refineries that contribute to global diesel supply.
