US DOT and Port of Corpus Christi Team Up for Nuclear Maritime Tech
The US Department of Transportation and the Port of Corpus Christi have formed a partnership to explore nuclear maritime technologies. On August 20, 2026, the two entities signed a memorandum of cooperation focused on small modular reactor (SMR) technology for maritime applications.
According to Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy, SMRs 'have the potential to reshape America's maritime sector, lower shipping costs, and bolster our supply chains.' He added that he is 'thrilled' about the partnership between the Port of Corpus Christi and the Trump Administration to lead the way in innovation.
The memorandum of cooperation will enable MARAD (Maritime Administrator) and the Port of Corpus Christi to work together on advancing maritime energy systems. This includes exploring opportunities for integrating SMR technologies, resilient port microgrids, shoreside power architecture, infrastructure capable of supporting emerging vessel propulsion concepts, and related workforce development opportunities.
The Port of Corpus Christi is a major gateway for American energy, with an 81% increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports since 2022. The partnership aims to power port operations, support the broader industrial complex, and advance maritime propulsion capabilities.
