US Energy Dominance: America Surpasses Global Peers in Oil and LNG Exports

The United States has solidified its position as the world's leading energy producer and exporter. According to the Energy Institute's (EI) Statistical Review of World Energy, American oil production reached 21 million barrels per day in 2025, accounting for roughly 21 percent of global output. The country also remained the largest producer of natural gas, producing 1,074 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2025.

The US has become a net exporter of both oil and natural gas due to advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. In 2025, American LNG exports surged 27 percent to 147 bcm, or 25.4 percent of the global LNG market. U.S. LNG supplied 81.6 bcm to the EU, making up 56 percent of its LNG imports.

The growth in US energy production has been driven by fossil fuels, which met 88 percent of the year-on-year growth in energy demand. The EI's president, Andy Brown, noted that energy remains at the forefront of global priorities, shaped by changing demands on security, affordability, and sustainability.
