US Gas Prices Hit Record High Amid Ongoing Tensions in Oil Markets
The national average price of gasoline in the US has reached a record high for this time of year, according to fuel rate tracker GasBuddy. The current price is just over $4 per gallon, surpassing previous records set four years ago when the average price was around $3.98 per gallon on August 12.
This milestone comes amid ongoing tensions in the oil markets due to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war. The strait is a critical trading route that carries around 20% of the world's oil consumption, and its closure has led to months of turbulence in the oil markets.
A potential agreement between Iran and Oman to reopen the strait may provide some relief, but for now, consumers are facing record-high gas prices. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, announced on social media that this is the highest-ever level for gas prices after August 12 in any previous year.
