US Gas Prices Soar Amid Middle East Conflict
Gas prices across the United States surged in September 2026 due to escalating conflict and supply disruptions in the Middle East. The crisis has led to a blockade of key oil transport routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for about 20% of global oil supply.
The average gas price in Massachusetts jumped 13 cents in one week to $4.34 per gallon, more than $1 higher than last year's prices. Crude oil prices rose above $100 per barrel, exacerbating the situation.
Mark Schieldrop, AAA Northeast senior spokesperson, warned that prices could continue to climb if the conflict persists or worsens, as it would further tighten global supply.
The crisis has also affected heating costs, with households using heating oil projected to face bills near $2,300 this season, a 31% increase from last year. Households using electricity, propane, or natural gas may see about 9% higher costs.
