US Gives Go-Ahead for Texas-Based Company to Export LNG to Morocco
A Texas-based company, Sustain Energy LLC, has been authorized by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Morocco and other eligible markets through 2050. The authorization comes under Order No. 5473, issued on September 11, allowing Sustain Energy to export LNG equivalent to up to 51.75 billion cubic feet of natural gas annually.
The US has a free trade agreement with Morocco that requires national treatment for trade in natural gas, making Morocco eligible for the exports. Sustain Energy plans to source LNG from 17 existing small-scale liquefaction and peaking facilities in the US and transport it to existing US marine terminals before loading onto ocean-going vessels for export.
The authorization will remain in effect until December 31, 2050, but the company must begin commercial LNG export operations within two years of the order's issuance. The development comes as Morocco explores opportunities to expand its gas infrastructure and strengthen access to LNG supplies.
