US Hits Targets in Iran Amid Attacks on Saudi Oil Tankers
Tensions between the US and Iran escalated on Tuesday after two supertankers carrying Saudi oil were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies.
The attacks occurred within minutes of each other while the tankers were transiting outbound through the strait, according to shipping intelligence firms Marisks and Kpler. The Saudi Arabian-flagged very large crude carrier Sidr was struck by unknown projectiles about 16.6 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman.
The Liberian-flagged VLCC Senegal Prosperity was reportedly hit by three unknown projectiles approximately 17 nautical miles east of Khasab. All crew aboard were reported safe.
US Central Command confirmed that the US carried out attacks in Iran on Tuesday, but details were not provided. The attacks come after a night without strikes from the US.
