US Invests $100 Billion in Venezuela's Troubled Oil Industry
The United States is investing up to $100 billion in Venezuela's oil industry as part of an agreement between North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) and the Venezuelan government.
The investment aims to expand production by tapping into over 65 billion barrels of proven reserves. The deal has been touted as a way to boost American energy security and support Venezuela's economic recovery, but environmental groups are raising concerns about the potential risks.
Experts warn that increased oil production could lead to more frequent oil spills, leakages from aging pipelines, and damage to protected areas and Indigenous communities. Refining heavy crude can also require more energy, potentially increasing emissions. Additionally, natural gas produced alongside crude is often burned through a process known as flaring.
