US-Iran Conflict Drives Energy Prices Higher, Benefiting Oil Giants
The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran has led to a surge in energy prices, benefiting major oil companies like Exxon Mobil and Chevron. The two giants reported significant profits in their latest quarterly earnings, with Exxon's profits more than doubling to $14.53 billion.
According to Global Witness, a nonprofit organization that investigates environmental issues, the oil producers are among those reaping massive profits from the crisis. 'There are constituencies around the world who are having a very good crisis, and the oil producers are one of them,' said Patrick Galey, fossil fuels lead at Global Witness.
The US and European governments have implemented temporary windfall profits taxes on fossil fuel companies in response to the crisis. However, the tax revenue is not guaranteed, and some critics argue that it may not be enough to offset the costs imposed on consumers.
