US-Iran Deal Hints at Oil Price Rebound and Market Optimism
The US and Iran are close to reaching an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major energy transit chokepoint. This news sent oil prices tumbling, with Brent crude futures dropping below $80 per barrel. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview that there may be an opportunity to finalize an agreement today or tomorrow to open the strait and restore normalcy.
Bessent emphasized that the goal of the agreement is to ensure 'freedom of movement,' allowing unimpeded commercial vessel transit through the waterway. He noted that while risks in the region have persisted, a significant number of ships have continued to risk passage, with hundreds waiting to transit.
The potential deal has injected a strong dose of optimism into the equity market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 462.8 points, or 0.87%, to 53,641.21 at the open. The S&P 500 advanced 30.1 points, or 0.40%, to 7,630.62, refreshing its intraday all-time high.
