US-Iran Mediators Struggle to Broker Deal Amid Ongoing Tensions
Despite ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, mediators are working to broker a deal that could end the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. According to multiple officials, these behind-the-scenes efforts have been underway for months.
The proposed deal would first reopen the strait and lift the US blockade, followed by the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil sales. However, significant hurdles remain between the two sides, particularly regarding nuclear issues.
US President Donald Trump has expressed willingness to pursue a non-military resolution if one can be achieved, but the administration will not reach a deal with Tehran until nuclear issues are addressed. Iran has indicated flexibility on these matters, but the two sides are far apart on timing and which side makes the first moves.
The proposed deal also includes no tolls for shipping traffic on the strait, as per Iran's request. The US is seeking Iranian concessions on allowing inspectors to enter the country, a key demand under the memorandum of understanding signed in June.
