US, Iran Pursue Ceasefire Talks Amid Ongoing Conflict
US and Iranian officials separately spoke with mediators on September 28 in an attempt to end seven months of war. The conflict began in late February, resulting in thousands of deaths and shocking global markets as key waterways for oil remained blocked.
The US and Iran have previously agreed to ceasefires in mediated peace talks, but these agreements quickly unraveled. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said his country expected a response from the US regarding its ceasefire proposals.
Araqchi stated that Iran had presented a solution for ending hostilities, unfreezing billions of dollars' worth of Iranian assets, and lifting sanctions on Iranian oil. In return, Iran would allow the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital conduit for oil tankers.
