US-Iran Stalemate Fuels Oil Price Surge Amid Escalating Demands
A prolonged stalemate in the Strait of Hormuz has led to rising oil prices as both the US and Iran attempt to use economic pressure to coerce each other. The Wall Street Journal reports that President Trump's blockade on Iranian ports is keeping economic pressure on Iran, which in turn is demanding reparations for damage from the war.
The US naval blockade would also have to end, along with sanctions against Iran, and the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets. In addition, Iran wants an end to strikes against its terror proxies and exorbitant peacetime tolls to transit Hormuz.
In a recent incident, a Panama-flagged ship was fired on by US forces after attempting to break through the blockade. The US has also redirected 55 commercial ships, disabled two, and boarded two to enforce the blockade. Meanwhile, Iran has launched at least 22 strikes in the past two weeks, with some 52 drones and 12 missiles being fired.
