US-Iran Stalemate Sends Europe's Gas Prices Soaring
Europe's natural gas prices have surged by 2% in early trade on Monday, driven by concerns over the ongoing US-Iran stalemate and its impact on LNG supply. The front-month futures of the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), Europe's benchmark for gas trading, rose to $83.76 (73.62 euros) at 7:15 a.m. Amsterdam time.
The price increase comes as the US and Iran remain locked in negotiations over conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which has resulted in historically low levels of natural gas storage sites being filled. As of September 27, EU gas storage sites were just below 71% full, compared to over 80% for this time of year in the past five years.
Germany's storage sites are particularly concerning, with only around 57% of capacity filled, prompting fears about supply security if the coming winter turns out colder than usual. Despite these concerns, the European Commission has reassured that EU gas supply remains stable, citing a meeting of the Gas Coordination Group.
