US-Iran Talks Send Oil Prices into Free Fall

Oil prices plummeted on Tuesday as negotiations between the US and Iran gained momentum, causing Brent crude to slide over 6% in value. The decline follows a recent surge of nearly 40% in Brent prices since the conflict escalated earlier this month. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also slipped 5.42%, falling to $78.13 per barrel.

The current situation is a far cry from just last Thursday, when Brent topped $100 per barrel for the first time since May 31st. However, with negotiations underway and both sides showing willingness to reach an agreement, market analysts believe the recent spike may prove short-lived.

Norbert Rucker, head of economics and next-generation research at Julius Baer, stated that analysis at the Swiss bank shows 'confidence that prices will follow the usual geopolitical pattern,' suggesting a return to normal after the current volatility.
