US-Iran Talks Stall as Energy Markets Grapple with Uncertainty
The ongoing US-Iran diplomatic talks have stalled, causing uncertainty in energy markets. European natural gas futures have traded within a range of €70 to €75 per megawatt-hour (approximately $79 to $85) over the past week as traders monitor developments.
With the heating season about to begin, concerns over low European natural gas inventories persist. The current inventory level is approximately 71%, well below the seasonal norm of 87%. Oxford Economics projects that European natural gas prices will average €85 per megawatt-hour (approximately $96) this winter, a 140% increase from last year.
US President Donald Trump rejected Iran's proposal to restore full shipping lane access within seven days. Iranian officials privately indicated that reaching an agreement to end the conflict with the United States and reopen the Strait of Hormuz before the November US midterm elections would be difficult. Saudi Arabia has been one of the primary drivers of the export recovery, with September crude exports projected to reach 5.4 million barrels per day.
