U.S. and Iranian forces have exchanged fire after Iran launched ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy ships, prompting a retaliatory strike by the U.S. on three Iranian oil tankers.

The incident marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries, which have been involved in a long-standing conflict over oil exports and maritime security in the Middle East.

According to the U.S. Central Command, the Iranian missiles targeted the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, which has been deployed in the region since 2022.

The strike on the tankers was described as a 'proportionate' response by U.S. officials, who added that the operation targeted Al-Labanat camp using newly introduced 'specialised capabilities.'
