US-Iran Tensions Escalate as Strait of Hormuz Remains Closed
The Strait of Hormuz has been closed by Iran due to a naval blockade enforced by the US, causing a significant escalation in tensions. This has led to the rerouting of dozens of commercial vessels away from the strait, which is a critical waterway that handles around 20% of global oil trade.
The US Central Command confirmed that 48 ships have been redirected over the past 20 days, while Iranian authorities warn that any vessel approaching the strait will be targeted until the US lifts its naval blockade on Iranian ports. This has already disrupted energy markets and raised shipping costs worldwide.
The standoff began in late February 2026 when military conflict erupted between the US, Israel, and Iran, prompting Tehran to close the strait. Despite a brief ceasefire, Iran reversed its decision to reopen the waterway in mid-April, citing the continued US naval blockade as justification.
