US-Iran Tensions Send Crude Prices Soaring Above $95 a Barrel

Crude oil prices have surged in response to escalating tensions between the US and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, a key energy route, has become a focal point for concerns over global energy supplies. Brent crude rose above $95 per barrel on September 2, bringing it closer to the psychologically important $100-a-barrel mark.

The latest price movement is attributed to renewed military tensions between the US and Iran. The conflict has led to increased fears of disruptions to oil production, exports, and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Washington launched airstrikes against Iranian targets, while Tehran retaliated with missile and drone attacks against US military positions and regional allies.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright reported that 17 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the highest daily volume since the conflict reduced flows. However, preliminary data from Kpler showed only four commodity vessels crossed the waterway on Tuesday, compared to an average of about 13 over the previous 10 days.

Peter McGuire, CEO of Australia's Trading.com, warned that Brent crude could hit $100 per barrel as tensions continue to mount. 'Tensions mount and it sure sounds like war talk from the US,' he said. 'Brent crude nudged $97 per barrel in Asia trade this morning and triple digits look a reality this week.'
